DPG Tanzania

Field visit to Kigoma region has been postponed until after summer break

Known as a region bordering the shore of the second deepest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma region is one of the natural resource rich regions in Tanzania. The field visit of the DPGE in the region will offer opportunities to experience natural resources management challenges, opportunities and learn success stories from initiatives on ground. The field trip will include visiting DPG-E supported project activities, meet with regional/ local authorities and communities. It will cover Environment, Forestry, Fishery, Wildlife and Water Resource Issues.

Activities on fisheries will demonstrate the importance of research, community participation women empowerment in management and utilization of the resources. DPGE members will visit a beach management unit (BMU) and learn about co-management.

Forest conservation and management efforts are challenged by the pressure from adjacent communities. Alternative livelihoods such as beekeeping have been promoted in the region. The visit to beekeeping activities supported to forest adjacent communities will allow the members to grasp how these efforts help livelihood improvements and forest resources managements.

Gombe National Park will expose the DPGE members to efforts by the park authorities in curbing problems of wildlife conservation, poaching and population pressure. Moreover, DPGE members will learn about the Jane Goodall Foundation’s activities in the Park on how protect Chimps habitats through their community centred conservation approach.
